A 40-year-old man was shot in the face early Wednesday morning at 203 Lincoln Drive.

Columbia police said numerous shots were fired at the victim with a handgun from a mid-size older brown vehicle with heavy rust on the bottom of the passenger door. The vehicle was traveling west on Lincoln from Oak Street.

“We’ve had a few calls over there on Lincoln, such as trespassing and a few disturbances here and there over the summer months,” said Capt. Zim Schwartze. “Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing like this.”

The victim and an acquaintance were sitting on the hood of a car on the north side of the street when the shots were fired, police said.

“We believe there were four or five males in the car in their late teens or early 20s,” Schwartze said. “It does not appear to be gang related.”

The victim of the shooting, whom police would not name, was taken to University Hospital for treatment and observation. The other person was not injured.

The investigation was continuing, Schwartze said.
