All the action Saturday on Faurot Field didn’t happen in the evening.

About 480 players from the Columbia Youth Football League played in scrimmages there in the morning before the Missouri football team took the field for its opener against Murray State.

The youth games were divided into four divisions, including flag, for first- and second-graders; beginning, for third- and fourth-graders; junior, for fifth- and sixth-graders and senior for seventh and eighth-graders. It was the fourth year the league has held scrimmages on Faurot Field, and about 700 youth league fans came to watch.

This season, participation in the league has grown by about 10 percent, according to Chuck Everitt, the CYFL president, who said many of the league’s players will go on to play football in high school.
