Dennie Pendergrass, chief of operations for the Columbia Public Works Department, will retire after 30 years of service to the city, and Mary Ellen Lea will be promoted to replace him.

Lea will oversee the department’s solid waste, sanitary sewer, street maintenance, storm water and fleet operations, according to a news release from department Director John Glascock.

Lea has 14 years of public works experience in Columbia and Cape Girardeau, managing solid waste collections, household hazardous waste collections and recycling.

Glascock said all the candidates were reviewed by a selection committee and met with a group of supervisors and employees.
