A Columbia man was killed while walking down Nifong Boulevard early Saturday morning after a drunken driver hit him, Columbia police said.

Michael G. Bedford, of Columbia, was driving westbound on Nifong Boulevard near Barrington Drive at about 2 a.m. Saturday, when his car struck a pedestrian who was walking in the road.

Police said alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident.

The pedestrian, Jameson M. Kelly, 31, was transported by ambulance to University Hospital where he died a short time later, according to a news release issued by the Columbia Police Department Saturday.

Bedford, 29, was arrested on suspicion of involuntary vehicular manslaughter. As of Saturday afternoon, Bedford was still at Boone County Jail. His bond was set at $150,000.

Bedford has previous criminal convictions for stealing, possession of a controlled substance, operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner and several animal control violations.
