An 18-year-old Columbia man died on U.S. 63 near the Oakland Gravel exit when his truck left the roadway and struck a concrete culvert at 3:45 a.m. Thursday.
Derek E. Struckhoff, the son of Mark and Bobbi Jo Struckhoff, was traveling north on U.S. 63 when his truck went off the right side of the road and hit a culvert retaining wall. Division Chief Gale Blomenkamp of the Boone County Fire Protection District said that Struckhoff was dead when firefighters arrived on the scene.
Blomenkamp said he believes Struckhoff was killed instantly. The force with which the truck hit the edge of the concrete culvert retaining wall pushed the engine and transmission into the cab. The crumpled truck came to rest on its side, trapping Struckhoff inside.
Struckhoff was a student at Hallsville High School and a “fun-loving kid with a very big heart,” said his father, Mark Struckhoff.
Police were still investigating the cause of the accident on Thursday afternoon. They had no indication alcohol was involved, said Sgt. Timothy Moriarity of the Columbia Police Department.
