MU women’s team improves to 6-1

The Missouri women’s basketball team beat St. Mary’s College 79-64 in the final game of the Hilton Concord Classic on Saturday night at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, Calif. Tiffany Brooks was named Most Valuable Player of the event, scoring 12 points Saturday night, but fouling out of the game.

Alyssa Hollins scored 18 points against the Gaels, and totaled 36 for the tournament.

The Tigers (6-1) beat Alabama 78-70 in the tournament opener Friday. Brooks scored a season-high 23 while Hollins made four 3-pointers. Missouri shot 46 percent against Alabama and made eight 3-pointers. The Gaels defeated Cal State-Northridge 100-89 in overtime in the late game Friday to advance in the tournament.

HICKMAN GIRLS BASKETBALL: The Kewpies are 3-1 after play over the weekend in Quincy, Ill.

Saturday, Yvonee Anderson scored 25 points for Hickman in an 80-20 victory over Danville, Ill., then tallied 12 in a 55-14 win over Keokuk, Iowa. Lauren Nolke also had 12 against Keokuk.

On Friday, the Kewpies won 65-51 against East St. Louis, Ill., but, after leading most of the game, fell 59-48 to Bolingbrook, Ill., ranked No. 8 in last week’s USA Today national girls basketball poll.

BLUES: Yankic Perreault scored his seventh goal in eight games to lead Phoenix to a 2-1 victory over St. Louis on Saturday night.

It was his first goal since scoring six times in five consecutive games before going without a goal in his past two contests. Perreault broke a 1-1 tie after he buried the only goal in the second period with under two minutes remaining, collecting a long rebound off the pads of Blues goaltender Curtis Sanford and blasting it into the right side of the net.

Owen Nolan also scored for the Coyotes. Dan Hinote scored his third goal of the year for St. Louis.

Sanford failed to smother Ed Jovanovski’s shot from the left side and the Blues failed to mark Perreault, who has 10 points this season. The loss kept St. Louis from achieving its first three-game winning streak since February of last season. It earned consecutive shootout victories at Columbus and Detroit before taking on Phoenix.

Curtis Joseph handled a 5-on-3 opportunity for St. Louis about midway through the third period and stopped 25 shots in his sixth victory of the year.

Both teams scored in the first period, but failed to mount any serious threats in the third. The Blues tied the score at 1 on Hinote’s shot with 4:46 left in the first period.
