A pickup truck slid under a semitrailer on Interstate 70 near the Lake of the Woods exit in Columbia on Saturday morning, leaving one man critically injured and traffic backed up to the Callaway County line.
The semitrailer was traveling westbound at 9:15 a.m. when it slowed down for traffic ahead, said Division Chief Gale Blomenkamp of the Boone County Fire Protection District. The driver of the pickup truck, whose name has not been released, was unable to stop before rear-ending the semitrailer and sliding underneath, Blomenkamp said.
It took rescue workers 45 minutes to pull the driver from the vehicle, where he was transported to University Hospital, Blomenkamp said.
The speed of traffic and icy conditions on the highway were contributing factors, according to a news release from Columbia and Boone County emergency officials.
“As the roads become more clear and we get more people out there, the speed (of traffic) increases and the number of accidents increase,” Blomenkamp said.
The accident was one of several weather-related accidents in Columbia on Saturday.
