A Columbia woman died and a Mexico, Mo., man was injured in a three-car collision Wednesday afternoon west of Centralia.

Glenda S. Maddox, 53, of Columbia, was killed on U.S. 124 when her car was struck by a car driven by Joseph M. O’Connor, 18, of Mexico, Mo., according to an accident report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The report said the accident occurred when O’Connor tried to pass a tow truck pulling a vehicle and clipped the vehicle being towed as the truck was turning left. O’Connor’s car then hit Maddox’s car nearly head on. O’Connor’s vehicle flipped, throwing him from the car.

Maddox was pronounced dead at the scene by Dori Burke of the Boone County Medical Examiner’s office, according to the report.

O’Connor was airlifted to University Hospital, according to the report. He was listed in stable condition Thursday afternoon.

The driver of the tow truck, Jonathan J. Smith, 35, of Centralia, was not injured.

Both Smith and Maddox were wearing seat belts, according to the report. O’Connor was not.

No charges had been filed as of Thursday afternoon.
