MU loses its first game in conference

Missouri loses at Colorado when second-half shooting faltered.

Things looked optimistic for the Missouri women’s basketball team going into halftime with a 31-29 lead against Colorado.

But when the Tigers came back to the court, something stopped working. Missouri lost 59-71 to Colorado in its first game of Big 12 Conference play.

The Tigers were behind by as much as 16 in the second half before they rallied. Sparked by two three-pointers by Alyssa Hollins with fewer than five minutes remaining, Missouri came back. Tiffany Brooks made two free throws to bring Missouri within six points, but Colorado answered.

Shooting only 32 percent for the game, seven Tigers scored. Brooks and Carlynn Savant tied as lead scorers for Missouri with 14 points each. Nine of Savant’s points were three-pointers. Savant, the Big 12’s leading free-throw shooter entering the game, made 5-of-6 free throws.

Colorado, who has eight players taller than 6 feet, outrebounded Missouri and held Tigers center EeTisha Riddle to 13 points. Jackie McFarland led the Buffaloes with 18 points.

The second loss of the season for the Tigers (12-2, 0-1 Conference) ended a nine-game winning streak. The Tigers play next at 1 p.m. Saturday against Iowa State at Mizzou Arena. The Missouri men’s basketball game against ISU follows.
