INCLEMENT WEATHER DRIVING
With the threat of inclement weather looming this evening the Columbia Police Department is reminding all drivers of the following safety information. Weather reports indicate Columbia may experience significant ice on the roadways over the next few days.
• First, if you do not have to drive, STAY HOME!!!!
• If you do drive remember to take it slow and give the car in front of you extra room. Extra following distance gives you time to react if an incident occurs in front of your vehicle.
• If you have an accident contact the police department, if there are no injuries and the vehicle can be safely moved you should do so as to not further the traffic problems and your personal safety. You can exchange driver’s information and then file a Delayed Accident Report by going to the Columbia Police Departments website at Gocolumbiamo.com/police.
If you see a vehicle off the side of the road and it has yellow police tape on its door handle or antennae then the police have checked on it and you do not need to call.
SOME OTHER DRIVING TIPS:
Make sure you have adequate clothing for the weather and wear your seatbelt.
Drive with your headlights on to make yourself visible to others and keep all windows clear of ice and snow.
Do not make any sudden movements with your vehicle and SLOW DOWN.
If your vehicle starts to skid out of control, turn the steering wheel in the direction you want your vehicle to go.
Please be safe by staying off the roads.
