Resuming game between rivals in doubt

The Rock Bridge-Hickman girls basketball game, interrupted Wednesday because of a leak in the Hickman gym roof, has met a serious snag in its rescheduling.

The original plan to resume the game at 6 p.m. Monday has been scrapped after the severity of Rock Bridge starting guard Amaya Williams’ groin injury was determined. Williams slipped on the wet floor during the game.

With a meeting set for Monday morning to find a possible date to play, Hickman coach Tonya Mirts, fresh off a 67-27 rout of Pembroke Hill on Saturday, expressed doubt that a date would be found.

“I don’t see the game happening,” Mirts said.

She went on to explain that too many factors are working against the scheduling of the rematch. With Williams unable to play for at least seven days and the seeding meeting for the district tournament

set for Feb. 10, it would be unlikely to find a common date and time that the two schools and the three officials from the original

game could all participate, according to Mirts.

Mirts said there would be no danger of a forfeit, or the game being called at the point of interruption.

“By rule, there must be a definite imminent outcome for the game to be called a win for a team,” Mirts said.

Rock Bridge led 20-19 at the time the game was stopped.

“I think it will be rescheduled, I hope it is,” Rock Bridge coach Jill Nagel said. “Why wouldn’t we want it to be rescheduled? We had a one-point lead and all the momentum.”

In Mirts’ eyes, though, the game will be canceled.

“Not every team plays each other in a district,” she said. “Rock Bridge won’t play Helias until the district tournament.”

Mirts explained that her team used the possible cancellation of the Rock Bridge game to energize itself against the Pembroke Hill Raiders on Saturday night.

“I think the team is angry,” Mirts said. “And they played well.”

After some confusion on offense at the beginning of the game because of Pembroke Hill’s use of a 2-3 zone, the Kewpies surged 10 a 40-17 lead at halftime.

Mirts praised the team’s performance.

“They threw a lot of things at us,” Mirts said about the Raiders. “Once we started attacking the basket and everyone started moving off of Yvonne (Anderson), we played really well.”
