A Columbia woman was arrested Thursday on suspicion of one felony charge of stealing and seven counts of felony forgery after a Boone County Sheriff’s Department investigation uncovered the loss of $72,000 from the company where she worked.
Investigators accused Carol Lynne Buxton, 51, of 304 Caribou Drive, of altering records and forging checks at Simon Steel Inc., her place of employment between Oct. 1, 2005 to Sept. 11, 2006, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department.
Simon Steel Inc. is a steel welding and pipe fitting company located at 1330 E. Prathersville Road. No one from the company returned calls Friday about the case.
Buxton’s attorney, Andrew Popplewell, said Buxton “vehemently” denied the charges and will plead not guilty.
“We haven’t seen any evidence to the contrary right now,” Popplewell said.
Buxton began working at Simon Steel Inc. in October 2005, Popplewell said, the same time the company alleges the theft began.
The Sheriff’s Department began the investigation in October at the request of the company.
