Columbia residents can assess their risk for heart disease.
Columbia residents have an opportunity Thursday to learn more about heart health and get tested for possible risk factors.
The 2007 Heart Fair, sponsored by Boone Hospital Center and its charity branch, the Boone Hospital Foundation, is free to the public. It will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Boone Hospital bridge over Broadway.
Nineteen booths will feature information on smoking cessation, exercise, healthy eating and other subjects. Free screening will also be available for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and body mass index, all potential risk factors for heart disease. Registered nurses will administer the tests and tell participants whether their results are within the normal range or if they need to make an appointment with a doctor.
“It is important that people know their numbers in order for them to understand their risk factors for cardiovascular disease,” said Renee Nicholes, coordinator of the Heart Fair.
Nicholes said that people can help catch problems early by taking advantage of the free tests, which can cost up to $10 each otherwise.
The Heart Fair, which is in its fifth year, usually attracts between 500 and 900 people.
The Boone County Health Department, at 1005 W. Worley, also offers free blood pressure checks from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Staff can also provide free information on cholesterol management and exercises to improve heart health.
