Two Hickman High School students were injured early Thursday when their car spun off the road and overturned in heavy rain on Interstate 70 near the Stadium Boulevard exit.

The students were taken to University Hospital where the driver, Moenita McClain, 18, was in good condition Thursday afternoon. Her brother, Melvin McClain, 16, was treated and released.

Melvin McClain was wearing a seatbelt, but police were uncertain whether Moenita McClain was belted.

The siblings were on their way to school traveling east on I-70 behind a tractor trailer, Columbia police Officer Robert Bennett said.

According to a Columbia Police Department news release, Moenita McClain tried to pass the truck, but did not see a vehicle in the passing lane. She swerved to miss it and slid onto the south shoulder of I-70, where her car overturned, the report stated.

“The roads being very wet and slippery, and I-70 typically being packed at that time of day are contributing factors to the accident,” Bennett said.

Police said the Taurus the McClains were in was totaled.

There were no other vehicles involved in the accident, Columbia police Sgt. Timothy Moriarity said.
