A Columbia woman was assaulted at Parkade Elementary School on Monday after she tried to stop a man from crossing the school playground, the Columbia Police Department said in a news release.

Christopher O. Marteen, 20, of Columbia, was arrested on suspicion of felony assault on school grounds and first-degree trespass at 12:42 p.m., the release said.

According to the release, Marteen was attempting to cross the Parkade playground where students were playing when the victim approached him and asked him to leave the property. He did not, and after being asked to leave a second time, Marteen struck the victim in the face with the back of his closed fist, the release said. He then left school property. Police arrested Marteen after finding him at Rangeline Street and Blue Ridge Road, the release said.

Columbia police Capt. Stephen Monticelli said Marteen did not give a reason why he was at Parkade. Monticelli declined to give out the victim’s name.

Parkade principal Betsy Baker said the victim was a paid supervisor, but she would not release her name.

“A stranger came onto the playground and our supervisors did their job and asked him to leave,” Baker said. “He struck one of our supervisors in the face and then left.” Baker added that the victim told the school office about the man on her walkie-talkie, which playground supervisors have for this kind of situation.

Marteen was released from the Boone County Jail on Monday after posting $5,000 bond.
