Man charged in connection with Boone County National Bank robbery

A House Springs man was charged Friday with one count of second-degree robbery in connection with the robbery of Boone County National Bank earlier that day, police said.

Rex Nelson, 70, was arrested Friday when his car was stopped on Interstate 70, according to a Columbia Police Department news release.

Nelson was held at the Boone County Jail as of Saturday evening, and bond was set at $100,000, said Sgt. Chante Wright of the Boone County Jail.

Boone County National Bank was robbed Friday afternoon by an apparently unarmed suspect who left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

A bank customer noticed the robbery, left the bank and called the police at about 2:30 p.m., the release stated. Police said they arrived minutes later at the scene at 5614 St. Charles Road E. and the suspect had already left.

A witness gave police a vehicle description and a license plate number, and within a few minutes a Missouri Highway Patrol trooper located the car heading west on Interstate 70, officers said. The car was stopped at the 117-mile marker where the trooper and Columbia police took the suspect into custody, police said.

The news release stated there was evidence of the robbery in the vehicle.

According to police, no one was injured during the robbery.
