Why I like ultimate fighting

Saturday, March 24, 2007 | 12:00 a.m. CDT

For most of us, ultimate fighting means anger, violence and rage. Not for Jared Harrison.

“When I’m fighting, I don’t really feel or think anything,” Harrison says. “I usually go on instinct.” The Flat Branch Pub & Brewery bartender took down his first opponent three years ago.

Although the sport is violent, Harrison never feels as though his opponents are his enemies. Rather, he sees them as like-minded strangers.

“They’re people you’re going to have the most in common with,” he says.

Although Harrison has torn every muscle in his knee during training, he has won all four fights he’s entered. “It feels good to win,” he says, but “it feels better to get a tap-out or a knockout.”

After the recent birth of his baby, Harrison is going into training to prepare for his next bone-breaking fight.
