Herbs, honey, onions, spinach, meat, mushrooms, pastries and more lined tables at the 27th opening day at the Columbia Farmers’ Market. The farmers, all who live within a 54-mile radius, came to visit with friends and share their home-grown products.
“If you come a couple of times, you’d get hooked on it,” Caroline Todd, the market manager, said. “There are a lot of health benefits for coming out here and eating. For example, honey is good for people who have allergies.”
- Diana Denman sets up her handmade earrings before the Columbia Farmers’ Market opening day on Saturday. Denman has worked at Wolf’s Point in Lupus since 1978 and has been making jewelry since 1980.
The market will be open for 35 weeks, until Nov. 17, the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
“It’s probably one of the longest seasons for an outdoor market,” Todd said. “Every week we have a live performance, and it’s great to be outside.”
Farmers were grateful for the warm weather on Saturday. Last year on opening day, the temperature was 30 degrees cooler, Todd said.
