The rights of Native American, gays and lesbians, and women will be the focus of the second annual Social Justice Seder tonight at 6 p.m. at the Hillel Center.
The Passover Seder traditionally celebrates the Israelites’ escape from Egypt after 400 years of slavery. Tonight’s event will also celebrate stories of liberation by other groups that have suffered oppression, said Jordan Parshall, a member of the student staff at the MU Women’s Center, which is co-sponsoring the Seder.
“We’ve expanded the Seder to cover as many oppressed and marginalized groups as we can,” said Parshall, who is on the planning committee for the event. “Intolerance comes partially from not knowing about other cultures or groups of people.”
Parshall said educational events like the Seder can foster greater tolerance.
Beth Pickens, the Women’s Center adviser, said the Social Justice Seder is important because it sets a framework for looking at different systems of oppression and how they interlock.
“Anybody and everybody” should come tonight, she said.
The Seder will include readings, live music, guest speakers, and a kosher vegetarian meal.
Other sponsors include the Hillel Center, MU Multicultural Center, MU Alumni Association and the MU Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center.
