PrintA proposed property tax increase to finance two new libraries in Boone County suffered a decisive loss in the April 3 election, and now the Daniel Boone Regional Library Board is trying to find out why.
A motion was approved at last week’s board meeting to form a committee that will look into exactly that.
“We missed the mark on the plan, and we’re sorry that we didn’t have it right,” said Jessica Robinson, secretary for the Boone County Library Board. “Now we need to figure out the best way to have a conversation with the voters.”
Only about 27 percent of voters approved the tax increase.
Robinson said the committee will explore tools available to gauge public opinion, which may include distributing surveys, hosting public meetings and conducting opinion polls. The committee, whose members will be appointed by Lynn Hostetler, president of the regional library system, will present its recommendations to the trustees’ board at the next meeting on May 10.
The board will act upon the recommendations as they begin to formulate an approach to continuing or revising its master plan, which calls for new libraries in both southern and northern Boone County. The April 3 tax increase would have paid for both of those libraries.
“We want to ensure that we are listening to the taxpayers,” Robinson said.
The May 10 meeting will also address the future of the Ashland Library. The lease on the rented building expires in August.
