A pair of home runs helped the Missouri softball team beat Baylor 4-3 Saturday in Waco, Texas to take back the Big 12 Conference lead from the No. 8 Bears.
Tigers junior pitcher Jen Bruck, who moved to 18-6 with the win, hit a two-run home run in the second inning to tie the game at 2. Bruck also scored in the fourth, driven in when Alli Kennewell hit her second home run of the season deep over the center field wall.
Bruck threw five complete innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits before freshman lefty Jana Hainey entered in the sixth to earn her first save of the season for No. 21 Missouri (36-19, 12-2).
Brette Reagan hit a solo home run for Baylor (42-12, 11-3) in the third.
COLUMBIA COLLEGE SOFTBALL: The Cougars were eliminated in the second day of play in the American Midwest Conference Tournament after a 1-0 loss to McKendree and an 11-3 loss to Hannibal-LaGrange on Saturday in Springfield, Ill.
Katie McMahon (13-8) took the loss against McKendree, giving up five hits and no walks, while striking out four.
The Cougars gave up six runs in the first inning and three in the second against Hannibal-LaGrange. Meghan Bailey (10-6) got the loss.
Despite the losses, Columbia College (24-16) might have a chance to play in the regional tournament in Springfield, Mo. on May 8 through 10. The bracket will be released Tuesday.
ROCK BRIDGE TENNIS: The Bruins placed fifth among eight teams at the Tournament of Champions on Saturday in St. Louis. Pembroke Hill beat Thomas Jefferson on a tiebreaker for the title. Stefan Nosic and Jay Kinderknecht placed third in doubles, while Aron Franck had Rock Bridge’s best singles performance with ninth.
TRACK & FIELD: Former Missouri athlete Chris Cantwell won his fifth Drake Relays shot-put title Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa. Cantwell threw a season-best 71 feet, 3¼ inches on his fifth toss.
