Jim O’Dell, 63, of Fayette, has been an avid runner most of his life. But after falling off a horse two years ago and undergoing surgery, he had to take a break from racing. It wasn’t until December 2006 that he came back to the sport and he said he now runs an average of two races a month.
On Saturday, he was one of 87 participants in the 2nd Annual 5K run/walk hosted by the NROTC Midshipman Battalion, a student organization made up of members of the Navy ROTC.
Organizers estimated that Saturday’s race raised about $1,500. All proceeds will go to the Boone County chapter of the American Red Cross.
Mike Taylor won the event in 17:56, 10 seconds slower than his first-place finish last year.
Natassia Riordan, an MU sophomore, led the woman’s category with a 22:56 time.
James Craig, 5, was the sole runner in the 1 Mile Fun Run finishing in 13:42.
