An MU professor was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault of a law enforcement officer early Friday morning outside of a bar on Ninth Street, Columbia police said.

Officers said Timothy R. Waid, 44, an adjunct assistant professor of management in MU’s College of Business, was arrested at 2:12 a.m. Friday after he pushed a woman into a line of newsstands outside of a bar at the corner of Elm and Ninth streets. When officers intervened, Waid assaulted them, police said.

Columbia Police Sergeant Roger Allen said third-degree assault — although the least serious assault offense — does require physical contact with another person.

“You gotta push somebody, punch ’em or whatever,” Allen said.

He said while Waid was being handcuffed he resisted and was then sprayed with Mace by the officers.

“They tried to put cuffs on him. He pulled away, took a couple steps and looked back at the officer,” Allen said. “He said ‘I’m going’ home.’”

Allen said it was at that point that officers sprayed Waid with the tear gas.

Sergeant Roger Schlude, the arresting officer, was unavailable for comment Saturday.

Waid was then transferred to the Boone County Jail where he posted a bond of $1,000 — $500 for each offense, Allen said.
