PrintEfforts were under way late this morning to secure a floating barge that could threaten the Missouri River bridge at Jefferson City.
Missouri State Water Patrol officers were attempting to corral one of two barges that broke loose near Glasgow overnight on the flooding Missouri River.
Around 11 a.m., Lt. Nick Humphrey of the Water Patrol reported that officers and a tug boat from a Jefferson City sand company were working to secure the barge about 13 miles upriver from the bridge. He said the bridge would be closed if efforts to secure the barge aren't successful.
"We're going to play it by ear," Humphrey said.
The loose barge housed a restaurant called the Driftwood that has been closed for months, according to a spokeswoman at the Glasgow Police Department. She said that it was attached to a smaller marina holding an empty fuel tank.
Humphrey reported that the larger barge passed under the I-70 bridge without incident and has been floating freely down the river all day.
