PrintA Columbia man who was arrested twice last year for shooting at people pleaded not guilty in Boone County Circuit Court on Monday to unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.
Shacarin D. Steward, 30, was charged in December.
In that incident, police arrested Steward after a man driving in northeast Columbia said a pedestrian, whom police said matched Steward’s description, shot at him and hit his car, according to a probable cause statement signed by Columbia police Officer Keisha Edwards. Steward told police that he had not shot a gun for three or four years, and later said that he had not shot a gun since July. But, police said, a criminal list from the Missouri State Highway Patrol found “the presence of gunshot residue” on Steward’s hand.
In a separate incident in February, Steward was charged with concealing a weapon. After receiving a report of shots fired, police said they found a gun under the seat of the car that Steward was driving, along with bullets matching the casings they recovered from the site of the December incident and marijuana.
In 2002, Steward pleaded guilty to first-degree trespassing in connection with a bungled bank robbery at Union Planters Bank in north Columbia. Police said Steward and three other men attempted to rob the bank only to find that the doors were locked. They fled from the bank empty-handed.
