Plan ahead for flood insurance

Recent flooding in this state serves as a reminder of the costly effects of flooding on homes and businesses.

As river levels start to fall across the state, Missouri consumers should begin to think about the future risk of flooding on their property. Flood damage is not covered under a standard homeowner’s policy. Flood insurance is a special policy that is federally backed by the National Flood Insurance Program. Consumers can purchase flood insurance for their home or business regardless of whether the property is in or out of a flood plain, directly from their property and casualty insurance agent, or insurance company if their community participates in the NFIP. Insurance agents or companies can confirm whether flood insurance is available and what it would cost. Normally, a flood insurance policy will not go into effect until 30 days after you purchase the policy, so it’s important to plan ahead.
