JEFFERSON CITY — Rock Bridge junior Lauren Borduin won two Class 4 state championships at the MSHSAA Track and Field Championships.
She defended her 800-meter title and added a 1600 title to her list of accomplishments. Borduin finished third in the 1600 in last year’s championships. “I was in the mix last year (in the 1600),” she said. “It was just a matter of executing.”
Borduin practiced hard in preparation for the meet.
“It took a lot of hard work during the season to get to this point,” she said. “Our coach really pushed us so that we would be prepared to compete.”
Hickman also had athletes who did well this weekend. The most decorated athlete from either school was Hickman senior Shana White. Her best finish was second in the 100. She also placed fourth in the 400 and was part of the 800 relay that finished eighth. After completing all three events Saturday, she said she was “tired…dead tired.”
Hickman’s other medalists included senior Josh Mantooth (seventh in the boys 1600) and senior Asia Walker (sixth in the girls long jump).
The weekend started roughly for Rock Bridge senior Logan Gray, who was supposed to compete in the 100 and 400 and 800 relays. He was unable to participate because he was sick. Teammate Andrew Adams said Gray was hospitalized Thursday with symptoms similar to mononucleosis.
Despite the setback, the Rock Bridge boys 800 relay made it through the preliminaries and finished seventh. The Gray family wasn’t completely absent from the meet, however. Freshman Quinn Gray competed in the 800 relay.
“It was an awesome experience,” he said. “I hope to come back.”
Quinn Gray said that Rock Bridge is losing a lot of senior talent and he hopes to participate next year in the 200, after finishing fifth at sectionals.
Other notable finishers for the Bruins were junior Leah Moore, who placed eighth in the girls 200, and senior Ryan Neff, who missed placing by just .03 seconds in the boys 800.
