Cards hold on against Nationals

ST. LOUIS — Jim Edmonds had two hits and three RBIs, helping the St. Louis Cardinals end the Washington Nationals’ four-game winning streak with an 8-6 victory Saturday night.

Brad Thompson (3-1) allowed three runs and 10 hits in 51/3 innings and Albert Pujols was 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games for the Cardinals, who have won four of five. Scott Rolen had a two-run double and Adam Kennedy had two hits and a bases-loaded walk for St. Louis, which knocked out Levale Speigner (1-1) in the fourth.

The game was delayed by rain for 1 hour, 41 minutes with two outs in the ninth, a storm that intensified during the inning while umpires ignored the downpour as long as they could. Ryan Church and Austin Kearns followed with back-to-back doubles to cut the deficit to three. The Cardinals brought in closer Jason Isringhausen, and Dmitri Young greeted him with an RBI single to cut it to 8-6 before the rain came.

When the game resumed, Isringhausen got Jesus Flores to foul out for his 13th save in 14 chances.
