Quin Snyder is a head coach again.
Snyder, 40, will work for the Austin Toros, one of the 15 franchises in the NBA Developmental League. He replaces the late Dennis Johnson, a former NBA star who coached the Toros until he died from a heart attack on Feb. 22 after a team practice.
“I have missed the chance to compete the past years,” Snyder said in a statement on the Toros’ Web site. “I look forward to getting down to work.”
Snyder has resurfaced nearly 16 months after resigning as the Missouri men’s basketball coach in February 2006 under pressure from athletic director Mike Alden. The handling of Snyder’s midseason departure led to two university investigations and nearly cost Alden his job. Snyder had been coach since 1999.
Toros president Mike Berry said in a statement that he was “thrilled” to announce Snyder as coach.
“Coach Snyder will also be intimately involved with our community outreach and marketing initiatives throughout the summer as we develop our roster with the Spurs and our other affiliates,” Berry said.
Snyder also received praise in a statement from Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, who Snyder played for from 1986 to ’89. Snyder also worked as an assistant coach at Duke for five years before coming to Missouri.
“I loved working with Quin as a player and as a coach. He had a passion to play and has a passion to teach,” Krzyzewski said. “His work ethic, spirit, intelligence, charisma and leadership ability make him truly unique. I would want Quin on any team that I coach. I love him and wish him success in this exciting opportunity.”
The minor league job marks Snyder’s second stint in professional basketball. He spent a year as an assistant coach and scout with the Los Angeles Clippers in 1992-93.
The Toros will begin their third season in November. The team is affiliated with the Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs.
