PrintST. LOUIS — Chone Figgins had four hits, pitcher Ervin Santana started a four-run fourth inning with a two-run double and the Los Angeles Angels beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-3 on Saturday night.
Figgins had RBI singles in the fourth and ninth and extended his hitting streak to nine games. He also stole two bases, after swiping a career-high three against the Cardinals on Friday.
The Angels broke the game open with four hits and two walks in the fourth.
Braden Looper (6-5) lost for the third time in four decisions. He gave up 11 hits and three walks over six innings.
St. Louis got their three runs with home runs. Juan Encarnancion extended his hitting streak to 10 with a solo shot in the fourth and Jim Edmonds hit a two-run home run to pull the Cardinals to within 6-3.
Phillies 4, Royals 0
KANSAS CITY — Jon Lieber struck out 11 in a three-hitter for his 25th career complete game, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.
After allowing a single to leadoff batter David DeJesus, Lieber (3-4) struck out the next six batters while retiring 11 straight. He struck out the side on 14 pitches in the second inning and finished with no walks. It was Lieber’s fifth career shutout.
Gil Meche (3-6), the Royals’ tough-luck right-hander, struck out a season-best eight batters but took his fifth straight loss and dropped to 3-6 despite an ERA of 3.16, among the best in the league.
Meche retired the last 11 batters he faced after Rod Barajas’ RBI double made it 4-0 in the fourth. He gave up four runs on eight hits and walked only one. He was relieved starting the eighth by Joel Peralta.
Aaron Rowand singled and scored on Greg Dobbs’ single in the second.
Rowand singled leading off the fourth and Pat Burrell, Dobbs and Barajas all doubled, giving the Phillies a 4-0 lead and their seventh victory in their last eight road games.
Shealy struck out three times while Meche struck out both Abraham Nunez and Ryan Howard three times.
