Columbia police said a group of teen boys beat and robbed a 34-year-old man Monday night in central Columbia.

The victim told police that he was walking alone about 10:30 p.m. near West Forest and Garth avenues when the group of teens began following him, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department. The teens pushed him to the ground and began to hit and kick him, demanding his cell phone and other belongings, police said. The group left the area after taking several items, including his cell phone, a portable DVD player and several DVDs. Police said the man suffered a minor cut on his head and scratches on his back.

The man told police that the assailants were between 13 and 16 years old.

The Police Department’s Major Crimes and Youth Services units are investigating the case.
