Errors mar I-70 Series

Thursday, June 21, 2007 | 12:00 a.m. CDT

The Royals and Cardinals were tied 6-6 after 13 innings at press time.

The Royals jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning, and led 6-4 in the sixth. The Cardinals scratched out a run in the seventh, and scored one more in the ninth when slugger Albert Pujols doubled to deep right. He appeared to pause, thinking the ball was a homer, before heading to first, and missed a chance at a triple.

The Cardinals committed four errors in the game, and the Royals had two. Pujols had a foul ball bounce off his face in the first inning, but stayed in the game. He had collided with teammate Adam Kennedy while chasing down the pop fly.

The Royals fared little better; left fielder Joey Gathright just failed to hurdle shortstop Tony Pena while the pair were chasing a ball in the first.
