Freshmen shine on first day of meet

Two MU freshmen set new personal bests in the first day of the USA Track and Field Junior Championships on Wednesday.

The mutigers.cstv.com Web site listed the following results for the meet, held at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis:

• Nick Adcock, of Kansas City, Mo., competed in the men’s decathlon and came in third in shot put to beat his personal best with a throw of 13.95 meters. Later, he grabbed fourth in the 400-meter dash , setting his new personal best at 49.36 seconds.

His best effort of the day placed him in first in the high jump with a 2.02-meter leap, while he came in sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.20 seconds and ninth in the long jump with a jump of 6.34 meters. He ended his day in second with a cumulative score of 3,869 points.

Adcock is on pace to beat his decathlon score of 7,078 points at the Big 12 Championships earlier this month. His score at the conference championships made him the youngest person in the world to break the 7,000-point mark.

• n Lauren Begany, of St. Louis, took eighth place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.62 seconds, beating her personal best of 14.68. She took 13th in both the shot put and high jump before taking tenth in the 200-meter dash witha time of 26.07 seconds. She finished the day in tenth in the heptathlon with 2,828 points.
• n Lindsey Boldt, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, fared better with a score of 2,847 points in the women’s heptathlon. She did not break any personal bests, but did achieve second place in the shot put with a throw of 11.42 meters. She placed 17th in the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 15.38 seconds, and 19th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.19. Her high jump of 1.60 meters placed her in eighth. She ended the day in tenth place overall.
