PrintMU freshman Nick Adcock raced into first place in the Junior USATF Championships men’s decathlon Thursday night. As he crossed the finish line of the 1,500 meters with the clock at 4 minutes, 49.77 seconds, Adcock gained 620 points.
Those points placed him 135 points ahead of second place Wesley Bray of the University of Houston. He came in second in javelin with a throw of 55.26 meters, an impressive standing for someone who only started competing in the event within the past year. He also came in second in the 100-meter hurdles, beating his personal best of 14.88 seconds with a 14.43-second run.
His overall first-place score of 7,293 points surpasses his 7,078-point record performance in the Big 12 Conference Championships, where he placed 12th and became the youngest person in the world to score more than 7,000 points in the regular decathlon.
MU’s Lauren Begany’s best event in the heptathlon Thursday was the long jump, which she placed fourth in with a mark of 5.54 meters. She placed 19th in the javelin with a 23.35-meter throw and 13th in the 800-meter run, the last heptathlon event of the day. Begany closed out her run at the USATF Championships this year in 10th place with 4,591 points.
Lindsey Boldt finished the heptathlon in 13th with a final score of 4,468 points.
