The Safe Kids Coalition, a non-profit organization, is offering car seat checks Saturday.
The inspections will happen during the Boone County Farmers Market at 1005 W. Worely St. from 9 a.m. to noon.
Each check will take about 20 minutes to complete. Technicians will check that the car seat in each vehicle is the appropriate choice for the child.
Car seats come in different styles, such as a rear face seat or a high back booster seat. One style might be the better choice for a child than another. Proper position depends on the style of the car, the car seat, as well as the size of the child.
Another priority for the technicians is to educate parents on how to properly and safely install their own car seats.
Students from a child passenger safety technician course will check car seats on a first come, first serve basis. “Tomorrow is kind of a ‘field day’, if you will,” said Jessica Conyers, a Safe Kids volunteer. “It is a chance to get practice with the help of the instructors.”
The Safe Kids Coalition also offers car seats at a reduced cost donation for anyone who needs one, not just low-income families.
