Police chase ends in arrest

A 16-year-old was arrested after a 27-mile chase that started in Columbia and ended in sparks after police punctured the tires of the car he was driving.

Around 8:30 p.m. Monday, a deputy from the Boone County Sheriff’s Department tried to pull over a car that had been reported stolen from Cooper County. A news release from the sheriff’s department stated that the driver sped away from the area, near Brown School Road and Roger I. Wilson Memorial Drive. Columbia police joined the chase and tried unsuccessfully to deflate the tires of the car. At the intersection of Rangeline Road and Vandiver Road the vehicle struck another, and then continued on to Interstate 70 West.

The pursuit continued into Howard County from U.S. 40, where the Boonville Police Department used spike strips to deflate one of the car’s tires. Another spike strip placed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol deflated the rest of the tires, but still the driver of the car continued for about six more miles, throwing up sparks and debris, according to the news release.

The 16-year-old, who was not named because he is a juvenile, was arrested without incident by the Boone County Sheriff’s Department on suspicion of resisting arrest, first-degree tampering, leaving the scene, no operator’s license, and careless and imprudent driving.
