A Columbia woman’s purse was stolen as she was walking down the street in central Columbia Tuesday afternoon.

The woman reported that a man approached her on the sidewalk of Eighth Street near Park Avenue around 2:30 p.m., grabbed her purse and fled, Columbia police said.

The woman, who was not injured, called police from a nearby bus stop, said Sgt. Lloyd Simons. Witnesses told police the suspect ran north. Police searched the area but no suspect was found.

The purse was later recovered with all of its contents, police said.

Police were investigating the theft as of Tuesday afternoon.
