Representing Columbia in the Show-Me State Games can be an intense experience for almost anyone. But for Mason Wright there is some added pressure. Wright is the son of Hickman coach Jason Wright.
“It can be a challenge for him,” Jason Wright said. “His teammates expect more from him because of who he is.”
Wright, who is on the fourth-grade Columbia Cowboys, tries to live up to the high expectations. In Friday’s game, Wright scored the only touchdown for Columbia in a 7-6 victory against Chesterfield.
“I want to see my son succeed,” Jason Wright said.
In order to help Wright keep up with the high expectations, his father pushes his son to be the best that he can. Despite being pushed harder than other kids, Mason Wright really seems to enjoy football.
“I like to knock people out,” Mason Wright said, grinning.
That is music to his dad’s ears. Mason Wright said that one of the main reasons he started playing football was because of his dad and, from that point, he has loved the sport.
Although he will be entering the fifth-grade next fall, Mason Wright says he is looking forward to the day when he can suit up for the Kewpies.
“I’m really excited to get a chance to play for him,” he said.
Even though Jason Wright doesn’t coach the Cowboys, it’s like his son is already playing for him.
Jason Wright can often be seen standing along the sidelines offering shouts of encouragement to his son and the other players on the team. He realizes that competing in the Show-Me State Games is something that should not be taken lightly, especially since the team is made up of the top 22 players in Columbia.
“I am tremendously proud of my son and the entire team,” Jason Wright said. “It’s a team sport, and it takes a team effort to win.”
