Grimes suspended indefinitely
Missouri’s senior center is accused of third-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon
Missouri senior center Kalen Grimes was suspended indefinitely Monday by coach Mike Anderson after an incident early Saturday morning in Florissant.
According to Lieutenant Jack House of the Florissant Police Department no warrant has been issued for Grimes’ arrest, but he is accused of third-degree assault and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon. Grimes is accused of hitting another person in the face with the butt of a shotgun, according to House.
Florissant is Grimes’ hometown.
Anderson acted quickly.
“I am extremely disappointed in the actions of Kalen Grimes and have suspended him indefinitely from our program,” Anderson said Monday. “With this suspension, Kalen will not be allowed to workout with our team and must take the necessary steps to not only earn the trust of his coaches and teammates, but the trust of Missouri’s alumni and fan base.”
“We instituted strong social responsibility standards from the first day we arrived here at Missouri, and expect our young men to conduct themselves in a first-class manner in both the classroom and in their everyday lives,” Anderson continued. “Those standards were not met by Kalen, which included a zero-tolerance policy we implemented following the unfortunate events surrounding DeMarre Carroll last week.”
DeMarre Carroll, a transfer student from Vanderbilt and Anderson’s nephew, was shot in the ankle in an incident early Thursday morning outside the Tropicana Club in downtown Columbia. He was treated and released.
Anderson instituted a zero-tolerance policy following that incident. Days later, it came into effect.
“Although the circumstances surrounding both Kalen and DeMarre differ a great deal, I understand the cumulative effect these events can have on the perception of a program and want to assure our fans that these incidents will be dealt with appropriately,” Anderson said.
Grimes was the Tigers’ leading rebounder last season with 5.6 rebounds and 6.9 points per game and started 24 games. Carroll, sitting out after his transfer from Vanderbilt, had yet to play for the Tigers.
