PrintSurrounded by the echo of whistles and the “boof” sound of volleyballs bouncing off bare arms, Team Lowe sat on the floor munching on various snacks while awaiting their next match. The team is comprised of women hailing from Fort Leonard Wood, whose fathers or husbands are in the military.
“We’re the only team that I know that has a mother and daughter on it,” Kim Lowe said proudly.

“We woke up at 5:30 this morning,” Grace Lowe said before biting into a peanut butter sandwich. Team member Kendra Cox nodded and expressed her need for sleep. “But we must repeat to ourselves ‘The other team is tireder,’” Grace Lowe jokes. And it could well be true. Team Lowe, as well as the other volleyball teams playing on the courts at Columbia College’s Southwell Complex, have been at it all day, the first match started at 8:30 a.m.
Kim Lowe is their coach, or as much of a coach that a team thrown together as quickly as theirs can have. The team was formed for the sole purpose of playing in the Show-Me State Games his weekend, but despite the short notice, the team was preforming admirably. By 3 p.m. the team had played 11 games, and won nine of them.
Soon it’s time to warm up for another match, and they take to the court opposite the Ozark BearCats. The energy the women managed to conjure made them appear fresh, despite what was said earlier on the sidelines.
“If we’re going to go out, at least we’ll go out fighting,” Kim Lowe said with a smile.
By the end of the day, they would win the Bronze.
