Columbia- Nine-year-old Kaitlyn Evans of Sturgeon loves to play all kinds of sports. Her father says she’s a natural athlete. But at this year’s Show-Me State Games, she got to play her favorite sport, disc golf. She has her father to thank for that.

Her father, Darren Evans, introduced her to the sport four years ago. From there, she fell in love with it.

“I really like competing and having fun,” Kaitlyn Evans said. “It’s pretty much a hobby of mine.”

Seeing his daughter take an interest in the sport he loves brings a smile to Darren Evans’ face. It pleases him so much that he decided not to compete in this year’s games, instead he’s caddying for his daughter.

“I love caddying for her,” he said. “I’m glad she gets to enjoy it.”

Like any good caddy on a golf course, Darren Evans is right by his daughter’s side telling her to keep her arm straight and saying things like “good shot” when she does well. He said he likes caddying and watching her play because it’s something fun they can do together. He also said he hopes she keeps playing disc golf.

Based on her enthusiasm for the sport, Kaitlyn Evans plans on playing for a long time.

“I really try to get good,” she said. “I want to be like my father.”

Upon hearing this, Darren Evans’s face lights up brighter than the sun overhead. He now has proof that his daughter is having a great time, something he thinks the games should be all about.
