JEFFERSON CITY - A Cole County man fatally shot his ex-wife and later himself after holing up in his apartment and refusing to surrender to police.

According to the Jefferson City Police Department, James Ahart, 43, was suspected of shooting and killing a 46-year-old woman, whose name was not released, Monday night.

After the shooting, Ahart went to his apartment and refused to come out, police said. County, city and state law enforcement surrounded the place to try and arrest him.

Early Tuesday morning, police tried tear gas and pepper spray, but got no response, according to television station KRCG. They eventually entered the apartment and found the man dead, apparently after shooting himself.

Police said more details would be available later.
