COLUMBIA-A traffic crash at Old Highway 63 and Stadium Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon closed the road and left a car mired in dirt.
At about 2 p.m., a red dump truck filled with dirt swerved to miss a car that was turning left onto Stadium from Old Highway 63 and lost control, said Columbia police Capt. Zim Schwartze. The truck, owned by Triple S Hauling Inc., overturned and dumped its load of dirt on a blue Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Annie Dohack, a passerby, called 911.
“It looked like it started to go the wrong way, to turn into the other lane, and flipped over after it clipped the Monte Carlo,” Dohack said.
Dohack said between the truck’s speed and the sharp turn it attempted, she wasn’t surprised there was a mess to clean up.
“Dirt went everywhere,” Dohack said.
Both eastbound lanes of Stadium Boulevard were closed between Ashland Road and Old Highway 63 while the highway department used a loader and brooms to clean up the mess.
Firefighters had to extricate the driver, whom the police declined to name, before he was transported by ambulance to University Hospital, said Lt. Brian Wasson of the Columbia Fire Department.
There were no obvious injuries, Columbia police Sgt. Dan Beckman said, but he said people involved in rollover accidents must be checked by medical personnel.
He said no citations or summons had been issued.
