State senator cited for using false ID at casino

BOONVILLE — A state senator faces charges after state gambling officials say he used a false ID to enter a casino.

Sen. Jeff Smith, D-St. Louis, said he had been on an organized tour of the Isle of Capri in Boonville with other lawmakers and later returned to join the group and gamble.

Smith, 33, acknowledged using someone else’s access card to enter the gambling area, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

The offense of presenting false identification at a casino is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine and up to six months in jail.

Smith said he was not carrying his driver’s license and so could not register for the card required to enter Missouri casinos. The card allows the casino to track gamblers and enforce a state law limiting them to buying no more than $500 worth of chips or tokens in a two-hour period.

Smith said a casino employee gave him someone else’s card, which he used to enter the gambling boat. The senator said he was playing poker when gambling officials approached him.
