Lemons in roadway

Columbia - There’s the old adage that when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. A literal translation took place Monday.

Hundreds of halved and already-squeezed lemons were scattered in the right-hand lane at the intersection of Broadway and Sixth Street on Monday morning.

It was not clear where the lemons came from.

Columbia Police officer Jim Harmon said police received a call at 9:20 a.m. alerting them to the situation.

Harmon said police called the city’s Public Works Department to clear the lemons from the street. Nearby store owners also volunteered to help sweep the street as lemons that had strayed into the left lane were squashed by passing cars.

“Cars and lemonade don’t mix,” said Harmon.
