Frank Stack's oil on canvas painting "Missouri River-August" is featured on the Columbia Festival of the Arts promotional poster. The festival will be held Sept. 29 and 30 in Columbia.

COLUMBIA — Frank Stack’s “Missouri River-August” has been selected as the commemorative poster for the 2007 Columbia Festival of the Arts. The entry submitted by the well-known Columbia artist was selected from 26 other submissions by a panel of five individuals from the community.

The Impressionistic-style piece was one that the judges said they hadn’t seen in a while, said Rene Heider, panel member and owner of Deck the Walls. Heider said Stack’s painting illustrated the festival well and was related to both Columbia and mid-Missouri.

“We have no idea who the artist is when we judge,” she said, noting that the panel looks for an image that depicts the festival in a way that’s different from past winners and that will look as good when printed on posters.

Heider said Stack’s use of color made the entry stand out.

Poster copies of Stark’s painting can be purchased for $15 at the festival, Deck the Walls in the Columbia Mall and the city Office of Cultural Affairs in the Gentry Building at 1 S. Seventh St. Profits from poster sales go directly to the Office of Cultural Affairs.

The festival takes place Sept. 29 to 30 on the Courthouse Square and surrounding streets. Fifty visual artists and more than 30 performing artists are scheduled to display their work or perform during the two days. Stack is among five other painters slated to appear.
