COLUMBIA — The Columbia City Council will decide Monday night whether to authorize LaserCraft Inc. to install cameras at 16 intersections in Columbia in an effort to catch drivers who run red lights.

The contract calls for LaserCraft to install and manage the cameras, which would take high-resolution digital images of vehicles whose drivers fail to stop and wait at red lights. The still image would reveal the vehicle and its license plate number.

The cameras can also take 12-second videos of the violation as it happens.

Images would be made available to both the violator and to law enforcement. Police and prosecutors would decide whether to issue a citation.

Fines for red-light infractions are $92.50 and are imposed by Municipal Court. The proposed agreement with the city calls for LaserCraft to be paid $28.50 for each red-light fine the court collects.

LaserCraft would work with the city to determine which intersections are the best fit for the technology.
