PrintThe MU Athletic Department announced Tuesday that musician Sir Elton John will perform Oct. 5 at Mizzou Arena. The concert will take place the night before the Nebraska-Missouri football game at Faurot Field.
Amy Carroll, director of special events and booking for the MU Athletic Department, described the concert as the most prestigious in the university’s history.
“There is no comparison — we have not had any artist of this caliber at either Mizzou Arena or the Hearnes Center,” Carroll said. “The Rolling Stones at Faurot Field in 1994 is the only concert of the same magnitude.”
Since it opened in 2004, Mizzou Arena has hosted number of big-name acts, including Tony Bennett, Cher, Kenny Chesney and Sting.
John was already scheduled to play the inaugural event Oct. 13 at the new Sprint Center in Kansas City. That concert sold out in less than 90 minutes when tickets went on sale earlier this month, a representative from the Sprint Center communications department said.
There are about 11,000 seats in the arena, and the MU Athletic Department expects the show to sell out quickly. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Monday and will cost between $47 and $87. They will be available at the Mizzou Arena box office and all local Ticketmaster outlets.
John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947 in England, has won five Grammy awards, an Academy award and performed the best-selling single dedicated to Princess Diana, “Candle in the Wind.” Some of his other popular songs are “Rocket Man,” “Tiny Dancer” and “Bennie and the Jets.”
