COLUMBIA — A Southwest Columbia woman has contracted West Nile virus.

The woman, who is in her 40s, has been treated and is doing well, said Deidre Wood, a public information specialist for the Columbia/Boone County Health Department.

This is the second human case found in Columbia this year. Wood said the first case was confirmed Aug. 16 in Eastern Boone County. The patient was a male and has been released from medical care.

A release from the Health Department said that up to 20 percent of people with the West Nile virus will feel mild symptoms, while the majority of those with the virus will not feel any symptoms.
