Lightning ends Rock Bridge football jamboree

COLUMBIA — Lightning within the area of Rock Bridge Field prematurely ended the Rock Bridge jamboree, a series of controlled scrimmages played in round-robin format between the Rock Bridge, Hickman and Jefferson City high school football teams Friday.

“It’s unfortunate,” Rock Bridge coach A.J. Ofodile said. “We wanted to get more work in on offense.”

Play was ended during the third game between Rock Bridge and Hickman, with the Bruins’ offense unable to take the field. Each team was allowed two sets of nine consecutive plays and Rock Bridge’s offense struggled in its lone showing against Jefferson City in the first game, gaining just over 20 yards on 18 offensive snaps.

“We did some things that we haven’t done in a while,” Ofodile said. “I’m not really worried about the offense.”

Friday night’s struggling offense could be attributed to the absence of senior starting quarterback Jake Morse, who was out with soft tissue damage in his right foot. Ofodile said Morse will be day-to-day for the season opener against DeSmet at 7 p.m. Friday at Rock Bridge.

“We didn’t have our starting quarterback out there tonight,” Ofodile said. “We weren’t as diverse as we would be normally.”

By contrast, Hickman seemed to open up their playbook, producing three separate plays of more than 25 yards.

“The offense had a good showing,” Hickman coach Jason Wright said. “All in all we did pretty good, but we have to work on defense.”
